Ferries with rental cars – this is how payment and discounts work

Are you going to take the ferry with a rental car? See how the payment works at Rogaland Bilutleie, and how the own AutoPASS for the ferry agreement can give you a discount.

At Hos Rogaland Car Rental Our vehicles are registered for automatic payment of ferry crossings. Therefore, you usually do not need to pay when you drive on board. But did you know that you can get significantly better discounts by using your own AutoPASS for the ferry agreement?

What is the difference between AutoPASS and AutoPASS for Ferries?

It is important to know the difference between the two systems:

  • A regular AutoPASS card agreement Used for paying tolls and can also be used for payment on ferries that accept the AutoPASS card.
  • AutoPASS for ferry advance agreement Norwegian is a separate additional agreement that offers a higher discount on ferry trips against payment in advance.

Even if you already have a regular AutoPASS agreement, that doesn't mean you have an AutoPASS for ferry agreement.

With a private AutoPASS ferry advance booking agreement, you can get 50 % discounts on ferry connections that are covered by the scheme.

How are ferry crossings paid for at Rogaland Car Rental?

If you do not use your own ferry agreement, the ferry crossings are registered with Rogaland Bilutleie and billed to you after the rental period.

As a car rental company, we do not receive the same discounts as private individuals with their own advance payment agreement. In addition, we must invoice the ferry crossings separately. 25 % VAT (tax).

It may therefore be more reasonable to pay for the ferry crossings through your own private agreement.

How to use your own AutoPASS for the ferry agreement on the rental car

If you already have an AutoPASS ferry advance purchase agreement, you can check the possibility of linking the rental car to the agreement during the rental period. Please discuss this with us before making any changes, so that the payment is recorded correctly.

  1. Go to AutoPASS for ferry – My page.
  2. Log in to your private ferry agreement.
  3. Add the rental car's registration number and check that the correct AutoPASS card number is linked to the vehicle.
  4. Make sure the agreement is active for the rental car and that you have sufficient funds in your ferry account before you travel.

When the car and the chip are properly linked to the agreement, ferry trips can be paid from your pre-paid account with the applicable discount.

Important – Remember to remove the rental car from the ferry agreement afterwards!

When you return the rental car, you must remove the registration number from your AutoPASS for ferry agreement.

If you forget this, you risk paying for ferry crossings that the next tenant will make with their car.
